looks like im going to lose another scomb

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
hmm, well that definitely shot down the improper circulation idea lol I have no ideas as to why your fish arent doing well :/ I have a 75 gal that I'm looking to turn into a creepy toothy tank.. I will plan on eventually moving up to a 125 gal in a year or so

99.9% of the time its parasites.

I have been feeding live gold fish and fat head minnows to my characins for about 8yr now and never lost one to a death like this. I have lost lots of fish to jumps and week long power outages. But not the characin wasting disease.

I treat my new feeders for 3 days in a quarintine tank with jungle labs parasite clear and fungus clear and then feed. And then i treat my main tanks twice yearly for parasites as well. Just incase any slipped thru.

I dont by into the thiamine theory. Just because of what i have seen.

Its all most a 100% garruntee that if you buy 100 feeders that one will have a parasite. Its just nature.

And since your feeders were not treated you can garuntee that a parasite got in your tank. No doubt.

Sorry for the loss...just live and learn is all we can do.

is prazi-pro the same as the parisite clear from jungle labs. i mean will it work the same. or should u get the stuff your using.

it probably wouldnt hurt to treat both my main tanks with prazi like u do a few times a year.

u think they died from the wasting disease?

i have an empty 30gal i could use for a feeder quarentine tank. how many would u suggest i add to that tank at a time? maybe 50

dont let me scare u off. scombs are very nice fish. they apparently need just a little more attention then your average fish. and because they dont get to big can go in almost any size tank. i would love to get an armatus but im nervous it may outgrow my 125 fast. and woulnt go well in my 300 with the fish i have in there.

i good choice would be a redtail but they are hard to find. even then if u introduce parasite it may die also.

i will start to quarentine all my feeders with either prazi or parasite clear.

Prazi pro contains 1 parasite med praziquantel. And the jungle labs tabs contain 4 popular parasite meds all rolled into one easy to use tab. Jungle has praziquantel, difluorobenzamide, metronidazole, and acriflavine.

IMO prazi pro can only treat parasites that are treatable with praziquantel. While jungle labs can treat a much wider range of parasite possibility.

Thats why I allways use jungle labs parasite clear. And its alot cheaper.

My main quaretine tank is 55g with a 10g sump. I keep a stock level of around 300-350 goldfish, minnows in that at all times. It is critical to maintain a high stock level in a quaretine tank so that you do not get fluctuating ammonia or nitrite levels. basically balancing the stock balances the bio system. But high stock levels require large frequent water changes to keep the health of the food up.

My Q tank for my smaller feeders is a 20g with a HOB filter. i keep around 100-150 rosey's,platy's,swords, guppies in that at all times to balance it.

The day before i buy a new batch of feeders I feed really heavily and then add the new feeders and treat the tank. Then wait 3 days and feed as normal as long as there is no visible signs of disease.

That proceedure ha worked well for me.

my last scomb is sick now. he is not going to make it either. refused to eat for the last 2 weeks. i tried to hand feed just about everything with no luck. i tested the water for the heck of it and it is perfect.

it has to be internal parasite or something on that line. unless im missing something.

im going to treat my main tanks tommarow with parasite clear.

with all my scombs gone,:( i may be able to eliminate live feeders all together. all of my other fish will except frozen or flake, except my new spotted gar. but from what ive heard they are easy to get on krill or pellets.

im still bumbed about 3 scomb deaths in a month.

had to have been a bad batch of feeders. my bad for not treating first.

he is still alive so far. in my 30 gal quarantine tank treated with parasite clear. hopefully starts to improve.
