Looks like rolling blackouts in California this summer

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
they are the worse but by no means only, SD. PB, OB, aint all that much better.

Can anybody give me suggestion on generators? from Amazon or Home Depot? I have a UPS battery backup but it only last about 1 hour. That with my canister filter and a 200 W heater.

I moved to Texas 9 years ago and I have yet to hear about any rolling blackouts. It’s like they only existed when I lived in California. Same with drought.

First saw this thing a few years back, though I would share

There was a segment on PBS newshour concerning this issue if anyone wants to watch it:

I live in the Midwest so fortunately don't have to worry about it. I have my aquariums fitted with D cell powered backup air pumps that automatically turn on if power goes out.

I tested one of these and it ran for almost two days on the batteries (I was waiting for a replacement air pump and used the battery backup until it arrived).

I think I'd want my tanks running several sponge filters and/or Ziss filters (Aquarium Coop sells these) so filtration would still be occuring during outages.

Obviously planning for these possible 5 day blackouts would probably need a more extensive system including having a generator as having no power for days regularly.sounds miserable.

I was just about to end this post but it occurred to me that heat will be an issue as well. I'm thinking fans to create evaporative cooling on tanks would be a must. There are USB powered fans if one does not have a generator.

Just some quick thoughts.
