So I live in Los Angeles county and have been having an issue with the ammonia from my tap water... I just did a test and it reads .5ppm ammonia straight out of the tap. as a side note I change my water with 5 gallon sparklete jugs and I put over half a cap of prime in a 5 gallon jug and the ammonia is around .25ppm WTF I thought prime would kill all the ammonia?
And prime doesn't kill of ammonia (NH3). It merely converts it into ammonium (NH4) which is non-toxic to fishes.
Ammonium is alway included if you test for Total ammonia.

double check your test results and if your sure theres ammonia you should call your water supplier . thats unacceptable . then you could complain to the city if the water company doesn't get it together .

Its LA. I once read that if you throw a ball in the air, it will just kinda stay up there cause the smog in the air is so think. I think thats why the Rams moved to St. Louis.
Im just kidding of course. I know the API test kit tests positive for ammonia even after using prime, because it detects ammonium too which is what prime turns ammonia into.
the ammonia you are reading in your tap water is actually the chloramines that they use to make the water "safe" to drink. it WILL kill your fish. and Prime does fix it. Prime is expensive. especially if you have large aquariums.
or, you can cheap out like i did and buy yourself an RO water filtration system. i actually got RO/DI because i also don't feel comfortable with 300 ppm disolved solids (no explaination of what the solids are) in my water. the RO/DI 100 GPD system that i originally bought cost me $117, and took about 30 minutes to hook up.
