Is there another way of filtering the water without using Prime or RO? Will filtering the water through activated charcoal help?

FALSE. why do most people think that prime is the be all end all in conditioners. Chloram-x is the best and CHEAPEST for pure gallonage. 5lbs does over 18,000 gallons, and thats at $35. Check out primes price and gallonage. And yes chlorm-x does do chlorine as well as chloramines.

Does it detoxify ammonia and nitrites like prime does? I have never seen this product before...

If you have chloramine which oyu probably do and this is giving you the ammonia reading you can get a chloramine filter. I forget how often you need to change the filter materal but it's pretty cheap per gallon.

i'll have to check that out.. but chloramines isn't the biggest baddest thing in Los Angeles water.. it's just the one that shows up on the ammonia test.

yea it does all that. i got mine from jehmco.com
