Losing fish at wc time

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'd always used stress coat in the past. Over the last few months I switched to the super strength tap water conditioner as it is more concentrated therefore more cost effective

Moved into this house in April only 10 miles from my old house so I would assume the water supply is the same?

I think it has nothing to do with the water changes.....I think your hose may be leeching toxins into the water....I heard in the past people have used newer hoses and the rubber coating or something on the inside of the hose is harmful to the fish.

How long have u been doing things by hose and how old/new is it?

I do a lot of stuff w/ hose/washbasin combo but my hose is several years old....you might call it "seasoned"

I know there is chlorine in my water. As for the levels I have no idea

If you are on city water, then there should be a water quality report for 2015 or 2014 online. This will tell you the average dosing for chlorine or chloramine. In bigger cities, not all areas receive their water from the same reservoir, and the water quality report will tell you where your water is coming from. So your old place could possibly be receiving water from a different reservoir.

Using hose since April when I moved in. New kitchen faucet doesn't accept python so I have been running hose from utility tub in basement for refills

I can assure you that chlorine/chloramine will kill fish in the tank if you don't get dechlorinator in the water. I've done it twice. In less than an hour, they all kinda lay still on the bottom. Couple hours later they start dying.

I've "proven" this with small fish under 5 inches.

What's ammonia/nitrite/nitrate and pH of the tank water?

Do you use prime or safe? I know not all water conditioners treat both chlorine and chloramine

Yep, I would definitely use Seachem's Prime or Safe. Safe is more cost effective powder form. I use Prime because a 500mL bottle lasts me a long time.
