shoulda cycled your tank for a few days with goldfish or something, and add old water to the new tank for like a week, or use minnows to test your water, they usually die easily if your water isnt good

when i set it up, i used gravel from an old tank, some rocks that were nicely covered in algae (also from another tank) and a canister filter that had been running alongside another filter in one of my other tanks for over a month.
I think that maybe the young pleco's are fragile.
So now I've got myself a bigger one. around 15cm. he seems to be doing well. but he's destroying my plants. ha ha.
i've tried feeding him cucumber and weekend feeder tabs, but he's not interested in either and rather shreds my leafy plants. if that's what it takes to keep him happy then i will set up another tank to grow plants. ha ha.
Thanks for the advice guys.

get him some algae wafers hikari makes good ones

You overlooked the fact that the OP already used the established filter media to instantly cycle his tank. In this case, I'd continue monitoring the water parameters even if the cycling was done this way. I disagree with your suggested option to use the fish as a means of indicating whether the water quality is okay or not, and using the old water in that tank as well. Old water is useless. There is little or no bacteria harboring the water column. The old water was just added for nothing at all. Instead of using a fish to indicate poor water quality, invest in API liquid test kit.

Agreed unless you are using Prime water conditioner..API provides false readings..Use Seachem brand test kit

sorry for ur losses.
iv only had one die for no reason and he was about 3" and white tail plec, id had him for 6 months. i think my FH got to him tbh. since i got my tank ib had a total of 10 plecs, iv got 7 now all of which i got at about 1.5-2". the other 3 got killed by my FH in one night.
all the others are fine. they get fed algae wafers, cucumber and have loads of bogwood. no plants. oh and occasionally eat massivore pellets lol

im not sure if any of that helps but, hey, worth a shot in case.
x

I have been testing my water parameters weekly and they are fine and stable. I think my guy is pretty happy now. I'm definitely going to try find some algae wafers for him.
