My loss of my camain  which I am still grieving over led me to think........

what does losing a fish mean to most hobbyists....

to me the loss of my caiman upset me not because I was losing a possession but my possession was losing his life.... and I will never forget him trying to hold on and trying to live not die.......:cry::cry::cry::cry::cry:

but what does it mean to you

to some (extreme hobbyists) what info I have brought up leaves me to believe that most of the extreme hobbyists that it means more space to get more fish...but if it was expensive it was more of a possession lost and $ lost then greiving over the possessions life being lost....

but to people who keep fish as pets and get more attached to them seem to be more upset to the loss of the life....

what is it to you?

I love animals & get very attached to them, but I've also had close family members die, not the same feeling man, pets are pets!

OH NO! What happened? Your caiman was such a lovely looking creature. I recently had to put down my Mom's pet boxer, who for all intents and purposes was MY dog. Only 3 years old, he fell victim to a brain tumor. It was the hardest thing I've ever had to do. Fortunately the only fish I've lost are 2 Tin Foil Barbs and a Bala Shark, all from a massive ammonia spike. I certainly felt bad, but not nearly as bad as when Buster was put down. Now, if my African Brown Knife or JD or RD where to pass on, you bet I'd feel horrible.

Hey I wasn't tring to be rude or anything its just I try to keep things in perspective & I've lost a few pets that I love, but they are replacable.

right I understand.... pets aren't being compared to human beings who talk, walk, and socialize with us... its different... but here we are just looking at perspective of losing a pet.. how you feel about it kind of thing... and don't worry you weren't coming across rude...

oh and harpo it is in a thread in the lounge.... :(

i'm very sorry about your dog.... I think that we need a forum for losing pets...
just me but others might feel the same.......

PP I agree, I get upset when fish/pets die not because I've lost a possession or money, but because I feel so guilty that this life was in my hands and has ended unnecessarily most of the time.

well, i have mixed feelings. if a fish have personality i will get a bit bummed that they died, but over time, i look back at them as good times, but wouldn't get upset about it. if it was a reptile or a dog or something, it still hurts. just found that my red claw crab had died a few hours ago. he was great had him for a year and a bit and shall be missed, but not in the same way as pets that i can interact more with. I think thats the key with a lot of things, it becomes different when they can be your friend. even if their not always yours lol.

right... that is true... I had fish that I didn't interact with... for instance my chaca chacas... they sat there and ate other fish... but like my green sunfish which would "study" and eat from my hand... the latter was "easier" on me to loose... but my caiman I intereacted with everyday for a little bit at a time... so he was like a dog to me.....

rumble I agree 100% with that... that is the thing that hurts me the most... I also feel helpless (don't know if that is the right word) when an animal is dying and I can't do anything to help it.....

If it's a small fish, a dither or a fish that was there for movement, I take it almost personally. After all, I care for them, and it's a matter of pride and responsibility. I like to make certain that I do the best I can for everything in my care.

If it's a "pet" fish, then I am very sad. Perhaps not as sad as if my cat died, as I've cuddled him on my lap and gone through everything with him for 14 years, but it's still the pain of losing something you cared about.

I'm so sorry to hear about your caiman. I used to keep reptiles (iguanas, snakes and geckos), and I know it can be hard to lose one. And your dog, too.

sorry for your lost, I too have a reptile/crocodile (mindorensis croc) pet about 2-1/2 feet long. I would surely feel bad If I were to lose him specially now that my son has grown close to it. It really sucks!
