Loss of Plecos

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
IMO, air pumps/sponge filters are the bare minimum. The oxygen only goes in one direction(up). I'm not going to argue that fish can survive on this. Having a canister or HOB add so much more. They push the oxygen down in a tank(before it goes up).

When power goes out the effects of a bubbler wears out faster then the other filters
Hi thanks for sharing, but whats a HOB? Canister? do you mean internal filter ?

HOB is short for Hang On Back filter. What is the size of the tank and what were the sizes of the plecos? As previously mentioned using just sponge filters is the bare minimum. Having wood eaters increases the volume of waste as well. Keeping expensive fish on the cheap Never works out. For work I traveled a lot so I tried to have 2-3 times the necessary filtering capacity as insurance for the main tanks. Stores use labor to try and solve the issue and the price also factors in losses that you probably never see. (Race cars don't use regular gas).

No matter what the reason it still hurts to lose fish. Keep asking questions!
Jim

As mentioned HOB is Hang On Back filter. Meaning those that a external. A Canister filter is also external that tends to sit on the ground and has tubes that run to the tank.

Here's an example of a canister filter

Hi Jim, Thanks for the advice, yea I learned my lesson. all pleco are in their junior size. L183 (Starlight Pleco) are around 1.5cm each., L128 (Blue phantom pleco) is around 3cm. They're housed in a 1.2 ft tank. For my royal pleco (L90) and yellow spotted pleco they're 3inch each, living with my marbled lungfish in a 1.8ft tank with internal filter.

Hi warborg,
Thank you so much for sharing these pic. now I have a better understanding about the filters.

Larger water volume (bigger tank) and less fish would also give you more of a cushion. I've had my filters go out for 12 to 18 hours and things are fine. Goodluck in the future
