I'm so sorry to hear this. Just last night we wrapped all of our tanks in the thick window plastic because a big snow storm was making its way up here. Luckily, none of the power went out, but I'm glad we prepared in case it did. My dad lives about three hours away and has a generator. He's told me before he will drive up here and let us borrow it, or us drive down and go get it. I'd do whatever it took, but honestly can't afford my own generator, they are SOOOO expensive. But I guess you have to weigh that against how much you have spent on these fish you could lose.

Anyway, I'm glad you at least have one survivor, it's a pretty amazing story.

$200 for 2000w or $220 for 3000w

a little cheaper alternative would be to buy a power inverter that hooks up to your car, this way you don't have to worry about starting and storing a generator. just need to figure out how many watts you're using.

the gas might get expensive for long periods of use though, you gotta figure that in as well.

Wow, that's terrible! I just rented a generator for the next 2 days, as we are into a powerful blizzard & I'm not risking my 7 tanks to the possibility of losing power.

Tragic story. I'm sorry about your loss.

It was good of you to post, because it's a great reminder/warning to others about being prepared for a power outage:
-Have backup power... generator, battery powered pumps, etc.
-Design your sump so that there is no flooding if the pump stops.

Wow.. First.. very sorry for your losses, I know I would be devistated to lose so much of my stock. Lucky your husband is so supportive! And this is scary as we're getting hit by the same monster storm Chicago is right now. Tomorrow will be a nerve wracking day. My husband and I have a back-up plan if the power does go out but it requires a 30 min+ drive if it happens for more then a few hours.

Power outages are always scary for fish keepers.
