My female hystrix got an injury to her tail a couple weeks ago and stopped eating. The tip of her tail rotted off within about 2 days, it went quick. I was able to get her eating ghost shrimp, but she wouldn't eat much. She also started eating tiny amounts of blackworms again too, but I could tell she was still losing weight. Saturday night she died.

When I noticed the injury about a day after she went off food, I started doing extra wc in addition to my auto-drip system and also added salt. This seemed to help, but she never went back to eating full force. I tried to increase the temp, but my heater broke and the replacements I had on hand could only maintain existing temp. I got a new heater because it was under warranty but that took about a week.

My male is doing great, eating well and fat. The female was always skinnier, although I think she was healthy she just wasn't as vigorous about eating.

The real challenge was telling my 3 year old daughter that 'mommy stinkray', as she named it, had died. She took it pretty well, we're going to get a new mommy to keep the daddy company.

R.I.P. Mommy stinkray

Sorry to hear that mate... I wish you all the luck with your existing male and upcoming new ray.

Can I ask how the injury occurred? to help others / myself

sorry for your loss.

Thank you

Not sure how it happened. Peaceful tankmates, angels and geos, have never shown signs of distressing the rays. Could have been the male, or maybe scratching on driftwood?

sorry for your loss..
cool that your little girl is into stingrays.

Thanks. My daughter loves the rays, I guess this is the downside of having them involved though. We had to put our dog to sleep, so she's had some experience with losing pets unfortunately.

Sorry to hear, I would bet on the male he was probably chewing her tale off which is not too uncommon. He may have been stressing her enough to stop her from eating I would use caution when adding the next ray and keep them separated a while and be ready to separate them again if the male causes stress.

Again sorry for your loss and I hope mommy stinkray2 is trouble free

my male ray chewed a good 1 inch off my females tail, which due to infection multiple times caused her to lose the whole thin portion of her tail (retic) so now she looks like she has a flagtail.

just last week, after a yr and half of him injuring her, she got her revenge and bit the tip of his tail off, he lost maybe a 1/4 inch of it but infection was kept in check.

i had them partitioned off for a good 6-8 months, only allowing them full aquarium roaming every once in a while for short periods of time. (he was also biting chunks off her disc previously, getting mating jitters)

they are now unpartitioned for approx 1 month and just the single bite. silly buggers.

good luck on your next female and continued luck on your male.
