the Office living in the now...
Had them for about 3 years.... this winter my deicer died and like a dummie, I did not replace it in time. I have to start over this spring...

For my pond set up, during the winter I turn off pump, lower the water below the overflow plumbing and add the deicer. I know some run a pump all year but I am afraid my plumbing will burst.

Is there something else I should be doing? I am all ears...

In order to overwinter koi in a frozen pond, you need an opening in the ice for gas exchange. This opening can be created by using a de-icer, leaving your filter running to create moving water so ice doesn't form, or by utilizing an air pump to keep a hole in the ice open. If using an air pump, try to keep the pump indoors so as not to pump cold air into the pond. I usually just leave a mag pump running and have the output of the pump near the surface. This creates an area of open water.

This spring when I start over, I will invest in two deicers and separate circuits and a pump for aeration.

Very sad ... thanks.

Don't waste your money on a de-icer. Just use a small pump. It will keep the ice from forming and circulate the water. That de-icer costs a lot of money when it's on.

Just buy a small pump? which way would I have the pump facing? The water would not freeze over?

I'm really sorry to hear that bomber.
I also agree with the pumps. My koi will hopefully be outside this summer. And if it happens, I will just run a pump to keep the ice away. It's all about the agitation. Ice won't form if you have agitation on the surface. Which is why a airstone works for most people. I don't trust de-icers as the primary source for keeping your fish safe for several reasons. I've personally seen some problems with them. I'm sure we will be in touch before next winter and I can tell you some of the reasons why I don't trust them, as the top choice.

If your starting over this spring, I meet be able to spare some koi. If not I can definately take you to the best place to pick up whatever you need.
William, at Waterfall Gardens, aka (Black River Koi). He's the best and most knowledgable of anybody around. And he beats everybody when it comes to price also... He is open all year round also, and keeps his koi indoors so you can buy any month of the year. If you go there without me tell him Aaron from Wadsworth sent you and he might hook you up some. He's a good guy!!! Also pay with cash... You might get a better deal...

Bummer. Koicicles. Sucks. Sorry.

i am so sorry for your loss.... i do not trust those di-Icers .......after three of them failed on me.. i bring mine in every winter now.. put the goldfish in a big tub in the basement..
