Well a pump is fine if temps just reach freezing for a few days. Here ND. I run a stock tank heater which cost less then the POND DE-ICERS they sell. I took an old milk crate and put filter around the edge put my small pumping and covered with grill rock and then added amino chips in a panty hose at the suction end of pump. This helps a little with the ammonia build up down there. This setup keeps a 4x4 opening for gas exchange at 20 below this winter. I lost all mine 2 yrs ago with the pond de-ice but the stock tank one for cattle works better and used less electricity to run. I have about 8000 gal pond so and it goes from 5ft to 2 ft in depth. Kept my minnows alive for ice fishing on the river in front of the house to.
