We have a locked gate on our river trail, so it definitely wasn't left by a fisherman. Our first thought was it was left by a cat. However, all of our cat's presents to us are left at the front or back door. Yup, I can just picture her going to the river, catching the fish, carrying it up to the house and then leaving it on the driveway. We even showed the fish to her, and she showed no interest in it. We had to nix that theory. On the other hand, there are bald eagles and a host of other birds around here who fish out of the river. There are other animals that probably get fish sometimes, but it doesn't make sense that a raccoon or fox or bear would leave it on the driveway. The bird theory seems the most plausible to us.

i'm wondering if it was a bird, how could it not come back for it?

Birds of prey don't tend to recover dropped fish. They're not as bold as scavengers

well, obviously if it was a fisherman it wouldn't be done on purpose. maybe it dropped unnoticed or jumped out of a bucket. and I didn't want to assume her whole property was gated

I've gone to lakes here where a trail leads you right through someone's property. so seeing her pictures and all, I had to ask because she has a long driveway.

That measly fish was only about 6" long. Fishermen pull out real fish from the river. The only other person with a key to our gate got some beauties earlier this spring. And yup, we once had a dog get salmon poisoning feasting on carcasses along the river bank. I'm still sticking to the bird theory.
