Freddy, Complications are common in almost every litter. I have been asking alot of breeders there success rate with pups and most all litters seem to have some that just dont make it. Like your said cant blame yourself it's just nature some live and some dont.

Do you think this might have something to do with lack of nutritional balance as compared to what rays might ingest in the wild?..

Although Shrimp and Seafoods are high in protein and great staple diets for rays, perhaps the crustacea they eat in the wild is the more optimal provider of nutrition for pregnancy.. Charvet-Almedia's studies on both feeding and reproduction of potamotrygon hinted at these aspects, but provided no comparison to hobbyist work/husbandry..

I have never seen a pic of a wild ray 'gorging' themselves like we feed them in captivity.. perhaps rays do this type of feeding in captivity because they actually have to overeat food that is less nutritionally balanced in order to intake adequate amounts of varied nutrients..

Sorry for your loss Freddy.. If I get some blacks down the road we will have to swap genetics..

Sorry....just curious if the pups were seperated in their own tank after birth?

Keep your head up Freddy... A better tomorrow :)

Do you think this applies to all cb rays? I am actually surprised to hear of how many people are losing their leo pups. I have been breeding motoros for a long time with only one death due to a birth defect. Yea I see runts in a litter or some that tend to grow twice as fast compared to their sis or bro to a certain point but never have I lost a pup and believe you me I'm no perfect ray keeper. I guess in my experience motoro pups seem much more hardy than leo pups making motoros ideal for the fist time ray keeper. Wish I had a breeding pair of leo to test it out!

Sucks for your loss Freddy but there is always the bright side. It looks like you have many more litters down the road to look forward to!

Thanks Scott. I think this does apply to certain species. The few guys I know personally that have breed Leos have all lost more than one pup. Although Leos are very hardy as adults or even juveniles, they seem to be very fragile as new borns. I know I did everything right down to a Tee and I still lost a pup. I also was told that 116 days was still considered premature.
