Well I went downstairs to the room with my 125 turtle tank in it today, and noticed something wrong immediately. My alli snapper wasn't in his normal cave hangout. I checked around a bit and found him dead on the bottom of the tank in the back corner:(. Apparently he wasn't as good of a swimmer as I thought, and he drown in about 15 inches of water with almost no current because I removed the powerhead a few days ago.

This comes a week after I finally got him to eat some pellets instead of just talapia fillets. Its kind of upsetting. I should have known there was an issue a few days ago though. I found one of my commons in the exact same position and thought he was dead. I took him out and put him on a counter to go get something to put him in to get rid of his body. He wasn't breathing or moving. When I came back, I watched him spit up a large amount of water. He was ALIVE! I just figured it was a freak accident, let it go, and now one of my favorite turtles is gone because of it. :wall:

I should have learned my lesson the first time. Time to remodel the tank, because I still want the water level where it is at.

That's too bad, I always tried to keep my water level low for that reason. Now that I have a monster I'm more worried about swimming space

Thanks everybody. I already picked up some more of those plastic plants for reptiles with the suction cups on them. They just kinda float around and the turtles love to sit on top of them. I think I'm going to try to add a ramp that goes from the bottom all the way to the surface. My terrapin and sliders are fine, and I figured that my snappers would be the least of my worries with deeper water. I guess I was wrong on that one.

Sorry for your loss :( I lost a baby sulcata tortoise today for some unknown reason. :(

poor little guy. This was my biggest fear also. I kept my water so low that it barely covered the shell out of paranoia. Sorry for your loss.
