:cry::cry::cry:
lost my redtail payara yesterday.
before lat night,my tilapia decided to pick on him.
i thought it was nothing since thats what normally happens.
but the tilapia seemed to have stressed it too much.
then my pbass decided to join in the fun.
he rammed into the tat....
and so,he has gone....

Boy, these threads are getting old.

And we sit here wondering why there's no big Tats.......

Don't get me wrong...I killed my fair share. I had 5. Between rays and Armatus I have none.

Dang shame. Makes me want a tank just for them..... To honor all the fallen tats....

sorry to hear. mine is a pansy, too, lol.

Sorry to hear that.

Is it common that the Hydrolycus tend to meet their demise due to tankmates?

I've never kept one, but I'm really wanting one and I tend to see a lot of these types of threads.

They are delicate with tankmates. It's VERY hit or miss. What works one day may result in death the next. I've kept them in the past with good luck but in my honest opinion they need to be the kings of the tank if you want long term success. Anything that is a threat to them or eats before them will be problems in the long run.

Hydros are snipers. They strike at the ideal time when prey is where they want it. Mix fish that are clumsy in with them and it's a recipe for disaster on the Tats part. If another fish is chasing its food then it will NOT strike. No strike means angry hungry fish. The start of problems.

Don't get me wrong...they may "live" with anything but they will NOT THRIVE with anything.

MY experience.........

Fish that were housed with Tats and then moved due to aggresion issues:
Spotted Gar
Silver Dats
Indo Dats
Thinbar Dat
Motoro Rays
Blood Parrots
Clown Knife
ANY Cichlid
P. Bass
ARMATUS

Tankmates that worked LONG term:
Pink Tailed Chelceus
Nandus Nandus
Black Ghost knife
Tire Track Eels
Fire Eels
Reticulated Rays
Hujeta Gar
Rhaphiodon Vulpinus

I lost 1 to the dats 2 to the Armatus and 2 to the Motoros. All mine met thier demise by way of tankmates.

I wouldn't try any of the primitive or bony tongue fishes nor any shape or form of Cichlid

Thanks DB!!

Well, that's not good news for me becaue Dats and Gars are a big part of my collection. I was most concerned with my aros because my black and silver are VERY aggressive feeders...oh, and my bass would probably not work well either I'm guessing.

I'm thinking I'm better off waiting until I can do a species tank.

Thanks again, DB...that helps a lot.

I would have thought that my tat would have been fine w/ all my fish (SA/CA cichlids aside obviously) because none of them are aggressive eaters, but the ornate proved me wrong. I will figure out something. it is doing great w/ the marbled goby, although neither of them want to eat.....bastards
