lost my redtail payara

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sorry to hear about the loss. I dont think the p-bass/tat combo would have worked for very long though seeing as how tats grow so slow. I heard that the ideal tankmates are calm, semi aggressive fish.

Don't take my word as law. There's always people out there that thrive on proving others wrong.

FACT-Arrows and Pbass grow way faster than Tats. Can this be remedied? Sure.
ALL my Dats are/were Bi-polor. Sweethearts one day cold blooded killers the next. I do NOT trust them. With Armatus yes. Tats? No.
Gar are like a starvin fat kid at a buffet. Food goes in and they clumsily chase it and always scared off the Tats. Could remedy by feeding live as the Tats then accell...IF you're into that "live" thing. I'm not. as long as the gar are not much bigger I think they may be fine..but again my gar outgrew the Tats. Now when the gar top out they could be reintroduced to similar size Tats and I believe it would be fine.

My case is a lil different. I live in a friggin cornfield. Tats in Iowa? Come on! To me IF I want a shoal I pay online vendor prices. $80-90 shipping. $60 in gas to drive to the Minneapolis/St. Paul airport which is almost 2.5 hours away..ONE way.....SO that being said I don't like to gamble.

Size plays a huge role. But with an investment like this for a broke arse like me I loose sleep not knowing what I'm gonna find dead in the morning. I like 110% peace of mind which is where the list came from.....my peace of mind.

Hydros are the fish I enjoy more than anything....rays being a VERY close second. So I take these guys very seriously..... I have been keeping them for almost 4 years now and have done a LOT of experimenting with all 4 available species of Payara with what I consider to be fantastic success with all but the Scombs. I believe they were short lived due to being housed in an all 4 species community.....OR the Scomb myth is true. I'de love to try them again but with an attempt at Ray breeding I have NO room for anything else.

I had no trouble getting every available species onto non live food and believe my Armatus has one of the widest variety diets of any out there. And right now he still gets punked by a pair of gar that are NO bigger than he (or it) is. So as you can see every situation is different.

I'm sure there are others out there that have access to these fish much easier than I do and therefore gamble more...to each thier own. Did my Tats successfully live with everything on the MOVED list? Yes.....for months. But watching them everyday I cannot sit here and tell you I had 100% peace of mind.

Opinions are like arse holes...everybodies got one. If mine rub you the wrong way consider me one of the ********s.

good post, junkie. I learned the hard way, but my Tat is still alive, thankfully. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with mine. I will probably get a temporary 75 for it, my goby and the poly growouts. I think it should be fine w/ smaller senegals, but I'll have to watch carefully.

oh, crap, sorry for the derail. I'll post my woes in another thread.

I hope you don't mind I want this in my sig :D

actually,i know many of my fish will outgrow the tat.
and i have a solution for that when they do,besides,im already selling em.
my tat has always been fine with the tankmates.
he would fight for food with the aro,no problem.
maybe he was really weak since im starving him to get him onto shrimp.
so the stress killed him.

I have two tats in with a widebar and indo (smaller than the tats) A FL gar and a tigrinus. So far so good. The only aggression is fighting amongst themselves. It seems they either get along or are at each others throats.

Sorry about your loss, but I think mixing them in with ciclids was doomed from the start.
