My male retric died yesterday. He just never ate, at least well.:(

The ray was skinny when I got him four months ago, but not terrible. He was Prazied and quarantined for two months in a 20 gallon until I got him eating and then moved into the 180. He never grew. My other retric grew noticeably every month it seemed, but not this little guy. I had him on live cherry shrimp, baby marble crays, and small pond/ramshorn snails in the 20 gallon. He wouldn't take worms at all, though I tried like heck. He was offered Hikari sinking carnivore and sinking gold, but wouldn't eat them. I raised his water temp. to 85 and added extra aeration hoping to stimulate his appetite, but he never did eat enough to get "fat".

I moved him into the 180 with the hope that he would see the other fish eating and would try pellets, or at least worms. Although he would join the "frenzy" that is feeding time in the 180, he would not eat, just glide over food or spit it out, no matter what it was. At night I would try to place food directly in front of him or nudge it under the front of his disk, but he would just swim away and not eat.

Two weeks ago he stopped trying to even eat live shrimp or crayfish and still wouldn't touch redworms. He was sectioned off into about a third of the 180 with egg-crate by himself, just so the severums wouldn't try to eat the food I was placing in the tank for him. The only fish that was able to cross into the ray's section was my young fire eel, but he didn't bother the ray or eat his food. Then yesterday morning he was dead. He was so skinny, he looked like a ray skeleton. There was no food in the stomach when I cut him open.

What the heck caused this? Why wouldn't he just eat? The other retric I had ate really well, even from the beginning and I had no problems getting it onto pellets.

Tank stats:

180 w/sand bottom
82 degrees
two Filstar 3's and an Aquaclear 500 with Purigen
PH 6
Water change 75% to 90% every week

Tankmates:
3 severums
1 9 inch fire eel
15 red eyed tetras

Unfortunately that's not uncommon with wc retic pups. Probably nothing you could have done. Sorry to hear. You may want to consider hystrix or marbles.

KNH- I am starting to think he was WC, even though the person I purchased him from said he was tank bred. He was thin and a tank bred pup coming from its' "home tank" should have been well started and fat.

A hystrix was considered, but I had great luck with my other retric and really enjoyed him.

When I got the pup there was a shipping issue. I paid for overnight FedEx or UPS so I could pick up the ray early at the depot, but the seller sent it USPS express, which is 2 day to my town. I found this out when I requested the tracking number. The seller assured me all would be well and the ray did come in alive, but maybe the ray never shook that stress from being shipped for two days.

When the weather cools down in fall I will start looking for a new ray, probably another retric if I can confirm it is tank bred or a hystrix if I can find one.

It is just so frustrating because I tried everything I knew to do, read the books, searched the web and he still died.

Could have been pathogens/parasites that the prazi didn't take care of.

When medicating there is a length of time for meds and a length of time to allow for the fish to recover from the treatment. Some just don't take it too well.

sorry to hear about your retic, i had the same problem with the female i got when I bought a pair, but the male has made it through everything that has troubled him, he is my little trooper. hopefully your next ray keeping venture goes well

HOw many times have you treated him? Ive treated my 3 wc retics now approx 3-4 times ( i got them at different times) w/ prazi and at least one still has white poop... I also free feed blackworms.. my littlest one ive had to kep an eye on because my big female bullies. fire eels will eat anythign and everything rays will imo. sorry for your lose. don't be disheartened, and i agree they are great fish.

sorry for your loss. you should never buy a skinny ray in the future. always pick a fat and healthy ray before you purchase

You should really consider a motoro retics always die.

Sent from my iPad using MonsterAquariaNetwork app
Now that is just not true!!! I hate when people make statements like that!! WC retics may not be as hardy as motoros but a CB pup is just as healthy and hardy as a motoro. You want a CB retic I can hook you up. Ask around on here my pups are top notch CB retics. Besides that I hadn't even heard of anybody else captive breeding the retics???
