I've been watching it from the beginning and I agree that you get pretty hooked trying to figure out what the heck is going on. But if you haven't watched it form the beginning, jumping in now will confuse the hell out of you.

i stopped watching that show after if found out that the monster was a "cloud"

The "monster" is the physical remains of fate controlling itself through time travel. See, the island has a time machine, and re-circulates itself every 108 minutes. But there are problems with going back in time and controlling your fate. The smoke monster killed the pilot after he got the transceiver. The smoke monster killed Eko after he looked back into his past and changed his personality. The smoke monster doesn't kill everyone, and didn't kill Locke or Jack.

The ghosts you see in the show like Kates horse, walt, Jacks dad, and so on are fates way of encouraging the people to do things they need to do, i.e. Jack' s dad encouraged him to help others, Walt encouraged Locke to survive, and so on. If you really pay attention to the show it's a great watch, definitely my favorite.
