Lots of dead fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
No new sponge. I just looked at my readings again.... Must've made a mistake. I have about 10ppm nitrate. Nitrite is 0ppm, ammonia is 0ppm. pH is around 7. The goby is over a year old, and been in that tank for 6 months. The original neon tetras were in there for 6 months. I have a kit with the drops. I must've tried doing the test off memory and gotten it wrong.

If you use city water it's possible they changed something. I've heard of more than a few people losing fish that way. The city seldom notifys when they mess with the water supply. I don't know....check your heater or powerhead for in case either is shocking them, perhaps?

I have no powerhead. The heater doesn't appear to be malfunctioning. I boosted the temp to 82 deg. a few days ago and it's holding steady. Wouldn't a bad heater zap all of my fish?

I have 2 other tanks though and none of them are having these problems, so I don't believe the water has been tampered with.

I think i did have a bad case of NTD. I read the symptoms...they match up to exactly what I was seeing at night. I didn't think anything of seeing one or two of my neons up when all the rest were "sleeping" on the bottom. I think the fish received a nibble or two from my angels (which are cichlids, another species that can catch NTD) and they proceeded to drop dead. They lost coloration around the midsection (the neons would lose their blue, the angels' bodies would turn as white as a sheet) within an hour of death. My remaining neons aren't showing signs of the disease. I guess I'll just have to wait it out for a few more weeks before I make any moves towards restocking the tank. I just wish I was a bio major, then I could work on a cure for this disease that bothered me!

Man im sorry that really sucks. I am going through something similar and I am trying to save my favorite fish(a bichir) Is your big guy OK?

Update:

No more deaths thus far. All the tank residents have stopped showing signs of NTD. This has made me into a true believer of the quarantine tank not only for sick fish but new arrivals as well!
