GH, and KH are ratings of your water hardness.
The KH or Carbonate Hardness is a rating of your waters ability to absorb acids without major change to the Ph scale. It consists of carbonate, and bicarbonate ions that can be removed by boiling. This is why lime-scale forms on kettles and shower heads.
The GH or General Hardness is a rating of calcium and magnesium ions that have been acquired over time. Rain falls and runs over different rocks and soils, dissolving and taking on different properties.
When reference is made to a fish's preference of 'water hardness', it is the GH, not the KH that is being referred to. Inappropriate GH can cause kidney problems and have adverse affects of growth, and cause infertility.
A rating of 180 (ppm?) will be appropriate for Jack Dempseys to live and breed in.
