im using the DIY pvc overflow is its pretty loud. i searched the fourm and i only found thread regarding the stand pipe. my stand pipe is quiet its the one in the tank that is making all the noise, anyway to fix this? also i was messing with the out take of my canister (xp3) and on of the camps to hold the pipes fell off and went into my overflow and its stuck in there. anyway to get that out?

From what I can tell- it is all air related. The more air the system pulls in the more gurgling and plumbing sound it tends to make. I have found that getting the standpipe muffled with some polywool and ensuring that no air is in the top loop is the key once the invert is drawing the water in from the tank efficiently.

That may be the key - if the overflow invert is drawing too hard it will pull air in with the water and that will constantly cause gurgling no matter how much you suck air out of the top loop with a one way valve etc. If it is too low the flow rate will be too slow/pump must be retarded.

I have found a good medium and discovered that having the 90' on the invert with a grill on it was effective rather than a vertical pipe - although some slots in a vertical would probably work well too - cause I got whirlpools when I did that.

perhaps even a length of horizontal going onto the elbow would allow the flow to normalise. I was reading in the overflow thread about various venturi systems to quieten them but mine has settled down to the sound of a running water feature rather than noisy plumbing and I am very happy with that. Getting everything airtight and the invert flowing properly tended to be my biggest issue.

As for getting that clamp out - other than removing the system and flushing it out - maybe a long wire with something big enough to push it right through?

thanks, ive tried putting an elbow on top but that raises the water level and makes it to high in my tank. ill try and make some slots and see if that helps

I relate to the height/level problem - I eventually had to pull the whole thing down, cut the invert pipe so it would accommodate the elbow intake. I didn't glue the elbow so I can adjust the angle of the intake and height it sits on the pipe a bit,.

yeah i cut mine a little before but it as a pain to get the pipe out.

Is there a cap on the vent pipe? If so, does it have a hole in it and how big is the hole.

Forgive my ignorance here-

Are we talking loud standpipes-

Or are we actually talking about the overflow(the water going over the overflow to the standpipes)....Cause I'm haveing issues myself with this one...
the actual part that the water goes into

on the vent i put tape over it with a bunch of tiny holes in it

Try a PVC cap with one 1/4" hole in it. Is the sound constant or only an occasional gurgle (like every few seconds)

and AK, if you have a loud Durso standpipe, try a bigger hole. When a temporary siphon is created from a sealed system it will be loud as hell.
