Love hate feelings for jack dempsey

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
GT's do grow slowly initially. My didn't seem to grow within the first 6 months, and then when I changed the stocking around (removing the big jag and aggressive johanna pike), I guess he became more comfortable and grew from 2" to 5" within 4 months.

I do think it depends on the individual fish though - I has always heard JD hide all the time so I wasn't interested, but I noticed after watching a group of the at a LFS that certain ones seemed very outgoing, but the majority were very spooky. I bought one I observed coming up to the glass to look at me, and swimming around boldly, and so far she has been very outgoing, IMO.

Our current JD stays hidden ALL THE TIME. But the JD we had a few years back was out and about most of the time.
Both tabks have/had pretty much the same stock.
Seems JD have a lot of personality!

I have a small 2" one rifht now and he is very active, but I don't know what to do since the majority say there's hide all the time.

My jack is out all the time, even begs for food when he sees me come up to the tank. He's in with some aggressive fish plus a school of silver dollars so that could be what makes him so bold.

I might add some livebearers to see if that helps...I don't have a huge tank and they are taking up a lot of bio space and they just hide. I may give them another chance with dithers even though that will make my 60 gallon overstocked.

My issue with JDs are when they lose their straight torpedo shape and instead look bent. I really dislike that look.

It seems from all the responses on this thread and others, that just like other cichlids, although a species may have general behavior patterns it's still down to individual personalities.

My JD is fairly outgoing. I wouldn't call it a wet pet by any means but definitley not shy. He is in with other large CA SA cichlids. I think they just need plenty of tankmates to feel comfortable but don't overstock

Believe it or not my female jack dempsey is more outgoing then the male. I actually had a dempsey to kill itself by slamming into the glass when I walked up to the tank. I'm just quickly loosing interest. I may just rehome them and restock.

Idk if I could add any other fish because my tank is 26"×13"×21" and I think that is pretty stocked with just the one EBJD.
