I noticed that after seeing the pic too, I always thought it said 12in max but I guess they avoid any lawsuits by saying they "grow to 10in". Either it dies before reaching that size in the 50g tanks most ppl keep them in, or it gets bigger than that but still technically grew to 10 inches lol. It's a win-win situation for walmart because if it dies they'll be back to buy another fish in it's place, or constant food and medications if it survives and if all goes well maybe even a new tank that still won't be nearly big enough. I kinda regret saying pacu shouldn't be sold to the public because it's annoying enough not being able to buy fish like piranhas and rays in CA, but I definitely agree they shouldn't be sold in places that only sell 55g tanks. Especially not at places like walmart where ppl will buy one just because they needed dog food and saw a feeder sticking out of a baby pacus mouth (like me lol). At least most ppl who purchase thru private vendors do their research first and know exactly what they want based on the size of tank they have. The story about that forum doesn't surprise me at all but that's really sad to hear about the fire. My friend that helped me move the 240 said he used to have a 180 before his house burned down and the tank was still standing but the fish had boiled alive! I suppose that's what would happen during any fire with an aquarium inside but that would be a gruesome sightI've read and reread the WalMart label through the years. "Red belly pacu grow to 10" That's true, but what is omitted is that they then grow to 20", 30".
It's amazing that your pacu survived in a 90g. You must have maintained excellent water parameters. Typically, they die suddenly at about 2 years when kept in 75 gallon tanks. I joined a pacu forum. Everybody was gung-ho on keeping pacus. There were no moderators after both of them lost their pacus at two years. They gave out great advice like "change your water when you can smell it" The owner of the forum was also a non-participant. I suspect he had also lost his pacus. On a more positive note, Liz had her two pacu in a 210 for 7 years until they died as a result of a fire. (She had ordered a 500 g for them.) My two have been in a 300 g for 7 years. It is pitifully small for them. August will make 4 years since we started a big tank upgrade for them.
I can't say that pacus should not be sold to the public, but I think that any place that sells pacus should also sell tanks big enough to house them properly for their entire life....I guess that does eliminate all sellers as no vendor is going to stock custom made tanks big enough to house a pacu.
Damn your LFS in America sound crappy! We do have some ''unknowledgeable'' pet stores but i've never seen more blatant disregard for fish and their wellbeing than ''petco'' or ''Walmart''. From wat i've seen on these threads though, it's disgusting! These fish are a piece of artwork from Mother Nature.
My walmart had a TSN in with pictus catfish... I got a 5 dollar TSN that day... Resold for 50 bucks LOL
