low light 29 gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You can put them in the closet if you want.
For a 29 please find your situation below:

Dark = death
20w = slow wilt and die over several weeks / months
40w = severely stunted growth, mass die off if there is a sudden change in water parameters
60w = slow growth
80w - 150w = varying success depending on the individual species and their lighting reqs
150w+ = slow wilt and die over several weeks / months

none of the above seem good,even the 80 to 150 range you say gives you some success.what is the best then...i ask cause im in the same situation with a fully planted tank.picked up enough to fill a 29 for like 10 bucks.i do have diy co2 and ferts in it

same with me. I have DIY c02 and ferts but I just don't want to spend money on a light fixture that at bare minimum will cost me 50 bucks! even at home depot!

Not right any way you look at that statement.

For the base low light plants: amazon swords (not a good choice), crypts, anubias, java ferns, java moss, hornwort, elodea (both forms), and wysteria, your basic single 24" 20W 6500-6700K bulb will grow all these plants fine. More light will equal more growth, but that isn't always a good thing. Several of these plants will do great even in high light. I'd recommend the Hagen Life glo 2 bulbs, they are very good for growing plants.

WyldFya can you post a correction to my post please?

thanks wyldfya for the advice. I really appreciate it!

For a 29 please find your situation below:

Dark
= Extreme low lights will survive many months to even a year.
20w = Extreme low lights will grow slowly, but will be healthy. Nearly no algae growth.
40w = Low light plants will grow slowly, and healthy, more algae growth.
60w = Moderate growth depending on plant species. Moderate light and lower high light plants will grow.
80w - 150w = Needs co2 injection, high light plants and down will all grow well-moderately, save a few plants that do not tolerate high lighting. Ferts are recommended.
150w+ = CO2 injection is an absolute must, and it needs to be pressurized to have good results. Fertilizers are a must, and they must be dosed diligently, and in a balanced manner. A good test kit, and regular testing is also very important. Most plants will grow in this lighting.

Fixed.

awesome, thx.

No prob. I actually just setup my son's old tank again with some axolotl, and that tank had been left alone, and had dried out. That tank was stopped over a year ago. When I refilled the tank, I had both java fern and java moss growing in the tank. The axolotl ate the plants, but they were still growing.
