thank you for your advice! I decided to go with the sunsun for the price. Parents wanted a quieter filter than a HOB. I get a better filter, it is a win win. We will see how I like canisters lol. Picked the one that goes up to 100 gal just in caseI have 3 Sunsun units that's been running for nearly 4 years without much issues, so I am a fan of this brand just for the price alone. However, for a 55, I would make life simpler by going with 2 Aquaclear 75 for optimum filtration and ease of maintenance.
If you prefer a canister, the Sunsun 304b will be more than adequate and will cost you well under $100

Very good! You might also consider going with an inline heater. This gets the heater out of the tank so no issues for the fish and it gives the tank a bit more realism without the extra gear in there. Sun Sun makes one at a reasonable price. Hydor makes one too.thank you for your advice! I decided to go with the sunsun for the price. Parents wanted a quieter filter than a HOB. I get a better filter, it is a win win. Sweet, I bought a bag of Poly-fil a while back. Do you also use the bioballs and ceramic media too? What I do to all my canisters now is use Poly-fil. It is polyester pillow stuffing. I get a huge bag at Walmart for about $7. This bag should last your canister for 3 years. I put this in the bottom tray of the Sunsun canisters and just throw it out during maintenance cleaning. This stuff acts like filter floss, but much cheaper.
Interesting, I like the concept. I don't know much about inline heaters. Do they attach to the canister?Very good! You might also consider going with an inline heater.
