The water that comes from my tap is usually 7.8. not sure why. what i would like to have is around 6.0-6.5. without adding any chemicals. i will be adding 3 "large" pieces of mopani and 3 "large" pieces of malaysian wood. will this do it? tank will be 112 gallons. fish a 6 severums. also, i know there is a price difference(here anyway), but which is actually better, the mopani or malaysian? and what really is the difference?? P.S sorry for asking so many "newbie" questions but you guys give the best, all around answers on the net!

I use mopani and bogwood in my 75 and 120 and have not noticed a drop in my Ph. My tapwater is around the 7.2-7.4 mark and that's where my tanks are as well. Have had the wood in the tanks for over a year now.

i have several pieces of driftwood in my tank and it lowered my ph to6.0. Loss a few fish to it. I recently raised it to 7.0. Curious though why do you want it so low? My sevs seem to be doing better in the higher ph. 7.8 imo is too high but i would want to round out about 6.8 to7.2. Im not sure the amount it tskes to lower cause like i said i have alot but it definitely brings it down.

i have bogwood ane alot of malaysian. Tank is quite yellow which irks the hell outta me.

you might consider useing a buffer, though i think it's safer to stay clear of any chemicals

you can lower pH by adding peat to your filter
Agreed.

Commercial buffers ARE chemicals.

You can also lower it by injecting CO2.
All my fish do fine in condtioned tap water at ~7.8
I you are trying to lower it because you have wild caught fish, that's one thing.
If you are trying to lower it because it's the fishes "natural" water, don't bother. The fish you buy from LFS's or "chains" are most always in water closer to your tap than in nature. These places don't spend the time or money to duplicate the natural water, and neither does the wholesaler.

Driftwood leaches overtime, and does lower ph. My tap water is 7.6, and after a couple months with malaysian driftwood, brought my tankdown toabout 7.2-7.3. Then, when I planted it, I started CO2 injection. I drive my tanks down to 6.2 with CO2 injection. Also, for only injecting the CO2 during the day and having it shut off at night, the ph fluctuations don't hurt the fish at all, because it'sdue to CO2. It's the change in ph due to the change in kh that hurts or kills fish.
