Currently, i have a 60 gallon tank that is cycling, but my pH is way too high. Whenever i buy fish i acclimate them and they can't adjust to my basic and hard water. My pH is 8.5 and my kH is 9. All but the hardiest fish seem to have a huge problem with the pH. Is it possible to use battery acid (sulfuric acid?) to lower the pH of my aquarium? The LFS staff recommended to me API PH down, but its expensive and i cant afford to keep buying that stuff. I was also thinking about using peat filtration, but at my gardening center they only sell in HUGE bags (i think like 2 cubic meter bags). That is way too much and all the small quantities have miracle grow in them.

Sulfuric acid is harmful to your fish. You have to make sure pH downs do not have it, in fact.

There's nothing wrong with trying to do things cheaply. I am not aware of a way to safely lower pH with products around the house, but I know many other things can be done in the hobby without spending a fortune at the LFS. If I didn't cheap out with homemade mixes, food bought at the grocery store, craigslist tanks, filters, etc., I couldn't be as into the hobby as I am.

This can be a really expensive hobby, or you can cheap out a little, but it doesn't mean that you're not working as hard or don't enjoy it just as much. I figure, I can run five or six tanks and a huge pond, and save some cash where I can, or I can run a couple of tanks and spend top dollar on everything. The fish are just as happy, I just get to have more of them!

i think that black water extract will lower pH. i think it may be sold commercially or you can get it from non prepared driftwood. good luck

There are some DIY blackwater recipes somewhere on MFK... I've definitely seen them.

this seems like a good idea im happy you mentioned that.
and reyairia i dont think you know what your talking about pH down is sulfuric acid and there isnt enough of it to hurt your fish if you add it correctly
