lowering nitrate levels

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
And also I wouldn't worry about adding an extra ball valve. If your overflows can handle that pump wide open, which I'm sure they can, then you have no need to throttle it back. Also I keep a CA/SA community in my 220. I couldn't keep plants as they would be destroyed by my cichlids, so I keep potted plants in my sump. This works very well to help keep my nitrates down.

The other advantage to having a ball valve on the output of the pump is when you need to work on the pump, the water from the tank won't have to drain to the sump.

I forget that point...I always run mine submerged.

haha well thanks everyone for the input. Im sorry for getting so many topics into one post it just kept kinda rolling. But the only reason I went all out is cause the guy gave me this whole entire setup for only 300 dollars so I couldnt pass it up. My fish were out growing their 90 gallon and I couldnt pass the opportunity. My setup retail at the LPS where he bought it was over 3000 dollars. Cant go wrong with craigslist!

Kevan, no problem really. One question always seems to lead to another and pretty soon there are multiple questions being answered by multiple people and it can become a bit confusing. Most times it seems you have to pry answers from the 1st post-er to help determine what their problem really is. There is a lot of excitement when getting a new setup, especially if the equipment isn't familiar to you and you already have fish in the tank and then run into problems.

Ask away if you run into problems but also do a little bit of research into the basics. This comment isn't directed at you specifically but is just a generalization. I'm sure we have all asked similar questions in the past, I know that I have.

Thanks dee! You are right with how exciting it is. I do as much research as I can before asking on here. Sometimes I can't find exactly what I'm looking for. Learning as I go like many on here I'm sure
