Hey, my PH is currently at 7.8 and my Aro's are living fine. I've used PH down before when it was a little over 8.2 (my tap water is bad). Anyhow, I'd like to get it down to the 7.0 range as recommended. I've heard about driftwood naturally lowering the PH levels. But, I've heard cases of driftwood lowering the PH level TOO much. Can anyone give advice on how they lowered their PH with or without driftwood? Is their any tips like lowering the PH with driftwood, and then taking it out? I doubt that'd work, but any tips would be appreciated.

unless you really understand water chemisty, you'll be playing a dangerous game.

I don't....... I purchased API PH Down that I thought would be good since they're a trusted brand for my water conditioner and the water test kits. I'm regretting it since most forums I've read said that it's not good to use it. Why in the world would it be sold commercially if it's harmful to fish, especially by such a trusted brand as API?

Just get you some Aquarium salt and some water test strips and do a little home work on water chemistry.Once you've done that, start testing your water, the straight tap and the Aro's water and add the salt as needed to make your water soft 6.8 for Jars,7.2 for silvers.Adding driftwood for a brief period is not going to help. You have to ahve it in there permanently.

Add aquarium salt to lower pH :duh:

Add the driftwood too lower the PH and if it lowers it too much us ph-up to raise it:nilly:

How come people go left and right with opposing views on whether something works or not? Can anyone here confirm if they ever successfully used API PH Down or Driftwood..... and did not just speculate? I did a quick search and the first thing that came up already de-myth'ed a post above about Aquarium Salt lowering PH. Now, I'm looking for someone with real experience vs. speculation!

Compatibility:
Aquarium Salt can be used with tropical fish, goldfish and koi. Aquarium Salt will not change pH. Aquarium Salt should not be used as a substitute for marine aquarium salt.

Actually, I'm done with the idea. The second poster was right, if I don't know what I'm doing to the best of my knowledge, which I don't have time to do right now, I'm better off not trying until I am. PH is something that you don't want to mess with unless you're 100% ready to tackle the problem.

Also, for future reference this is a good thread on it: http://www.myfishtank.net/forum/fre...-questions/53324-salt-my-freshwater-tank.html

Yes driftwood lowers the ph and yes ph up and ph down are both bad to use in fish tanks , however they both work as well as driftwood use the damn driftwood you should have no problem , and ph is mostly approx. anyway as long as you are close the fish will be healthy unless you drastically change the ph level in the water they live in.
