Sometimes fishkeeping, like any other hobby, is backed by a little bit of luck. You never know if your fish will get along or not. You never know if your fish will feel comfotable in your water parameters. Some people have a wild mixure of fish that all get along, some people have 2 fish that are in a death match. Sometimes you put a fish in perfect water and it dies, sometimes you put a fish in average water and it lives. You never know with each fish having a different DNA makeup and coming from a different source.

I have a community tank with neons, CL's, plecos, and non-agressive cats(.5" striped rapheal, synodontis, banjo cat) and have had no damage to anyone for months. I added a 1.5" royal pleco 2 days ago, and 12 hours later saw a CL eat out its eyes. Both fish seem to be doing fine, but the royal doesn't move as much anymore.

It is almost all based on luck when you are dealing with things that have brains, because each one is going to be different, so you never know what you are dealing with...

what if its the fish or the way its taken care of and not the water itself?

sometimes you put a fish in average water and it lives.

what if nothing is wrong with the fish?

You never know with each fish having a different DNA makeup and coming from a different source.

but do we know that DNA has anything to do with it? and what would bew these different sources? afew example please

Probablitity/chance? :)

you could say im a rationalist

A rationalist approach to luck includes the application of the rules of probability, and an avoidance of unscientific beliefs. The rationalist feels the belief in luck is a result of poor reasoning or wishful thinking. To a rationalist, a believer in luck commits the post hoc logical fallacy:

A happens (luck-attracting event or action) and then B happens;
Therefore, A caused B.

In this worldview, probability is only affected by confirmed causal connections. A brick falling on a person walking below, therefore, is not a function of that person's luck, but is instead the result of a collection of understood, (or explainable) occurrences. Statistically, every person walking under the building was just as likely to have the brick fall on them.

The gambler's fallacy and inverse gambler's fallacy both explain some reasoning problems in common beliefs in luck. They involve denying the unpredictability of random events: "I haven't rolled a six all week, so I'll definitely roll one tonight".

Luck is merely an expression noting an extended period of noted outcomes, completely consistent with random walk probability theory. Wishing one "good luck" will not cause such an extended period, but it expresses positive feelings toward the one - not necessarily wholly undesirable.

its like if i breed two silvers and out of the bunch i get a albino.

is that luck? no, its probability, but if you want to label it as luck it would be labled as ignorance luck, or factors you dont know about, like the genetic history of the two fish and the probablity that one of them would become albino.

anyone understand?

just understanding fish and hope the best choice that you use for your fish will be the right ones.

You can mess with probability all you want, but the numbers aren't always right. Some people believe in Karma, some believe in luck. Some have trouble believing in anything.......... But I wish the best of LUCK to those people....

can i get an example of your statement?

say you bought a fish that was on sale due to a sickness like you paid only 1/4 of the actual price, BUT you knew and know the knowledge of how to cure it like ick or fungis.

then you take it home and started to treat it right away! then 2-3months later it is fully healed. and the price for that fish could be 2-3time what the original price was!:)

I have done this before.

I bought fishes that were on sale due to ick problems and i treated them and they are still alive. i have not yet got one with heavy fungis on it yet due to transporting them alone and entering differen water variables in your home or apartment, It can shock the fish to death.

But i am willing to give that fungis infected fish a second chance in life:) .
