I bought some lucky bamboo at Petsmart last week and put it in my aquarium.

Is there anything special I should do to help it grow and help it reduce the ammonia and nitrates in my tank? I have a jardini and silver dollars in a 240g and I have the lights on about 3 hours a day. I also have it floating at the top of the water because I don't have any extra holes at the top of my tank to put it through.

You need to get it out of the water somehow. Only the bottom bit with the roots needs to be submerged. Put it in the sump if you have one, and use a small light to keep it growing.

^^ +1 u want just the bottom part with the roots inside the water, the rest will rot if sumerged. I have 2 pothos in my tank and I cut the corner of the tank lid to slide them through. I don't use any small lights for them cuz the tank is in the living room and gets a fair amount of daylight. If u put them in the sump though ( or any dark area ) u will need a light.

i agree pothos works really well and a little easier to get into the tank. If the whole bamboo isin the water it will die.
