Thanks ! A few newb questions !

Do the tops of these lucky bamboo need to be out of the water ? Can I grow them successfully in their root tabs or will they need special substrate in my tank ?

Id probably start in my 90 gallon bichir species tank unless the top HAS to stick out of the water. In which case I really cant do it :(

The leaves have to be out of the water or the Lucky Bamboo will suffocate.

They do the best (for me) when the entire sprout is above the water line...

New sprouts will/do form below the water line and if left to their own they will form a new stalk... I've made a few baby stalks, they're cute :P

Substrate doesn't matter. I've had some stuck in gravel, some stuck in sand, some stuck in sponges, most not stuck in anything but water...

Consider getting one/some of the "miniature milk crates" with the holes cut in them I mentioned. You can trim the mini milkcrate to strattle a hole in your tank's top that will hold the Lucky Bamboo in the water but with leaves above the water line...

Get creative man

Oh boy im gonna have to get creative :( My tanks all have notorious jumpers and escape artists like bichirs. PLus glass tops :(
