Lucky or not, good fortune has little to do with the cost as it relates to silvers. Fact is, many LFS deal with wholesalers that are middle-men rather than dealing directly. This is often due to location of the store as compared to the wholesaler. In many areas you have many stores dealing with the same wholesaler simply because there is little other option and mom and pop shop mentality often results in sticking with a wholesaler simply because they are good people (rather than that the selection and quality is great). In my area there are a handful of stores. All of them deal primarily with the same wholsalers. Knowing that they are the only wholesalers being utilized by many of the stores in one area, the wholesaler raises the prices. The LFS then raises the prices to turn a modest profit. Unfortunately, that often results in the costs of certain popular and/or oddball fish being significantly higher than what they should be costing. If my store did not pay these costs to the wholesaler then we would not have any arrows to sell at all. Unfortunately there is a mark-up to be had in order to turn a profit.
While this may not be the only reason for high cost, it certainly is a significant one. -Andrew
