The fish is in total stress coloration, dark and dingy, but at least not pale like it was at the shop. I do notice that it has a slight green iridescence to the body and base of the dorsal and some red in the iris.
I was able to count 10-11 bars on the right side of the body and 11 on the left as well as 21 dorsal spines, 3 anal.

Great lookin pike!! Man all you Cali. folks get all the cool stuff!! LoL!! I need to move there or something, perhaps get an insider to ship me pikes from the LFS there...haha. Anyway, looks like a Crenicichla johanna, but its possible it might be Crenicichla sp. 'lugubris'. Very good lookin pike! Congrats! The coloration is unique, so definately keep it! :D
 
Johanna are pretty common no? I do like. :D
Not sure how I did for $8. This one's a little over 5" TL. Seems to be settling in well too.

You keep gettin all these pikes you might have to start sending your Heroina over to me!! :D :D I think you should get a few more...:ROFL:

They shore will keep you on your toes. Them color changes as they mature are totally worth keepin them for though!
 
No, not to much, In my area I got mine for 5.99 @ 3 inches. So it is line.
Besides if you like it and feel its worth it to you it doesn't matter
