Lump or Bump on Senegal bicher?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Awesome! Thanks a lot, I'm headed to the store right now!

Any time. Keep the thread updated on how hes doing. If you don't notice any improvement or its gets worse over the next 2-3 days try and get a picture uploaded so others will chime in on what it may be. Good luck.

P.S. In my 150 I have 4 bichirs: 2 senegals, a koliba, and a delhezi. When I feed them chunky foods such as pellets they develop lumps on their stomachs for about a day or so. It made me nervous the first time I ever saw that but just so you know it may be absolutely nothing as well. If the bump becomes red or looks like the scales are pushed apart is when it becomes more urgent.

I didn't feed them last night and the bump is getting bigger! It's not red and he still seems to be acting normal. I'm starting to get very worried. I will try to snap a picture when he's around the front of the tank.

Did you dose the salt yet? Also do you have a QT tank laying around? I wouldn't feed him these next couple days or if you do, feed something small like bloodworms. I would seperate him (to like a 10g-20g) and dose with salt and some melafix. You just need to keep a close eye on him and try to make sure the swelling of it goes down so that it won't rupture anything internally. And if you see any abnormalities in behavior or appearance post them up ASAP because they could help with a diagnosis. But uploading a pic would be the most helpful way.

It is not letting me upload any pictures. I haven't dosed with the salt yet, money is particularly tight as I was unexpectedly laid off for the winter. All I have is sea salt and I would assume it is a bad idea to put that in there. I don't have an extra tank, just a comunity tank with some puddle fish and gourami and loaches.

Well without any meds or salt I would raise the temp and try to do more small water changes (15% or so) every few days to try and keep the water clean. Without meds you can only hope it gets better. If you can Petsmart sells a good sized carton of aquarium salt for pretty cheap.

No problem, keep us updated. The next few days will be key in seeing what will happen

You guys are awesome! Thanks to all of your advice he is doing great. The lump in his side has almost completely dissapeared, and he's back to his old self again!
