How do the different species of lungfish (African, AU, SA) compare in personality, especially in interacting with humans? I know Africans are often killers of other fish, but little else.

My Marbled lungfish comes out and attacks the mangetic glass cleaner when you move it. usually watches anyone in the room and seems to show off for attention. once fed she calm down a lot - she wont attack during tank cleaning though and prefers to hide in a pipe, but is not bothered about being grabbed and moved to the other side of the tank. Still i wouldn't put my hand near her mouth :). Definitely the most interactive fish I have ever had.

Bump.

I was about to start this thread when I saw this. Im particularly interested in hearing from sales and aul owners. What are they like? Are they afraid of you at all?

My 80cm annectans has no fear of me at all, he always swims to the corner of the tank begging for food whenever a visitor approaches. As mentioned above, he doesn't mind being shoveled around when I am cleaning and wiping algae off his tank. This said, he loves attacking the plastic pipe (mistaken for food?) I use for changing water.

My 1ft annectens is not afraid of me. He loves to hand feed, and once he realizes that my hands are not food he doesn't bother me when I'm doing tank maintenance. Hes hands down the most friendly and interactive fish I've owned.

Super interesting! I didn't know they were so personable! So African are definitely characters, what about SALs and AULs? Anyone have stories about them?

My AULs never really reacted to me. But, one of the aussies seemed to have made friends with my female tropical gar. They were frequently seen swimming long laps across the tank together.

My 19" WAL will strike anything in front of it and senses food right away. I move it around when doing water changes but I'll never put my hands to close to its mouth it is by far my most favorite fish I have. Anyone have luck keeping more then 1 African in a tank together?

As bad as they are with tank mates, WALs are even worse with their own kind and similar species. I spawned SALs and the pair couldn't tolerate each other until they spawned. As soon as spawning was completed the male drove the female from the nest and continued biting her whenever she got too close to the nest. I had to remove her back to her tank once it looked certain they weren't going to tolerate each other any longer.
