May I ask how each of the species of Lungfish fare in a planted tank and whether or not keeping them with plants works or not (IE, like whether they would eat the plants or not)?
All my lungfish eat plants especially my aussie lungfish. Best plants for lungfush are those hardy fast growing floating plants or those that attached to driftwood such as anubius or java ferns. Don't bother with those planted plants as they will get uprooted. Lungfish love the taste of plant roots as well.
my friend successfully kept a lungfish for years in a planted tank but if i remember rightly, they were all tied to bogwood, never ate the plants, i'll ask him what plants he had, it was just the LF and a common pleco in the tank..
It would be best to get the lungfish now and you can do your test. Best to learn from own experience. Plants are cheap or some are for free if you know who to ask or to look for.
Also dont forget to take pics of the lungfish and tank setup once you got it.
I kept my SAL in a small planted tank for a while and he never noticeably bothered the plants (but this was only until he was 8-10" or so). He's now over 14" and the tank has no plants. I haven't even tried recently because he's with a uaru and two festivums that destroy plants
