Luring out Gymnotus Javari?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thought I'd write a bit of a final update on this post to sum up my results.

So, attempting the red LEDs again sadly didn't seem to work on my tank. I think I'd need to have something on the tank long term for that to take effect, but with what I've tried the nocturnal tank members are only active when it's pitch black.

As for using food, the knife is still quite small, probably about 4" if I had to guess. So large foods are currently out of option. One thing I tried was making a simple fish trap out of a cut plastic bottle, which I then loaded with a portion of bloodworms. The opening was small enough that the other tank members couldn't access it, but it should've been a large enough entrance for the knife. The results for that were inconclusive though, as it was pretty hard to tell if the amount of food in the trap went down. Unfortunately I didn't really get a chance to observe anything because I usually head to bed soon after the lights go off.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions though! I may try other food options in the future to lure it out, but in the meantime I'll just check when I have late nights and hope for the best. Or it'll eventually get big enough that it won't be able to hide as well lol, but that's probably a long ways away.

Have you tried to keep the lights on (but dimmed) for a couple nights? So darkest it will get its still lit enough to see something. It might work after a while when the fish will get used to it not getting any darker out than dimmed.

Mine really loved shrimp thats were too big to eat without ripping/biting apart, i dont think size of the food matters much since it should just tear it up. But i could be wrong, not every fish is the same ofcourse
