Anyone keep this kind of fish? I'm just wondering about its max size in captivity. What's the growth rate like? Any extra info? Anyone have a link about aquarium care of these snappers? Can they have tankmates?

Not a species normally kept in aquaria. Growth rates are variable to environment it's maintained in. The less salinity or temp, the slower the growth rate. Normally a harbor species so, initial quarantine is essential to rid the fish of intestinal, dermal, and gill parasites. Feeds on almost anything thrown at it (fish, snails, shrimp, crabs, worms, cephalopods, etc.). No idea on aggression in aquaria (different species or conspecifics). In the wild, young specimens tend to shoal. Temp must be variable since the species is found from Maine to Brazil.
Like I said, not normally kept in aquaria. So, max size determination has to wait on a diverse number of specimens being maintained in aquariums. Grows to ~3ft in the wild. Don't know if they'd grow larger or smaller in aquaria. Could grow larger in aquaria due to more regimented feeding and purging of common parasites inherent in wild specimens.
I've kept 3 species before. Lutjanus argentimaculatus (mangrove snapper - meanest), L. sebae (Emperor snapper - favorite for personality), and L. kasmira (blue-stripe snapper - best looking and most peaceful).
Kept my red emperor as a single-specimen tank due to his size (max 45+ inches and 70+ lbs). Kept 5 L. kasmira (15-16") together with only slight aggression in the way of rushing but, not much contact. My mangroves became increasingly aggressive as they matured. They would go out of their way to kill anything introduced with them (no matter the size).

I was thinking about getting a grisseus from TUIC myself until I googled it and learned a few things...they don't grow to be as attractive as the mangrove snapper,they will need full saltwater as adults....I have kept the mangrove snapper before and it was just as Oddball described it to be.

what kind of snapper is freshwater and grows to less than 16 inches? Do you have anyfish simalar to that. Not cichlids?
I think all of the true snappers move into saltwater as adults.The mangrove snapper or jack used to be pretty common in some of the stores around here and sometimes they were sold as Redfin datnoids....Wes has some now,very small though.
