I need ideas for tank mates for my longear tank. They are about an inch and a half now and I only plan on keeping the best looking male. There are 5 in a 75 (one got trapped under a rock and died when my kid messed with the tank decor) and the tank looks empty, especially since my two juvie sleeper gobies jumped out (always close your tank lid people!)

I was thinking of adding log perch, but have no idea how many to add and some sort of darters or dace. Would redside dace work well?

Any ideas would be appreciated!

Mo Longear are the most beautifull and one of the most agrressive Longears out there; good tankmates would be Large madtoms or Stonecats, shiners like the large Luxilus sp and large Chubs like the Blue head, Redspot,Creek, Flat and Hornyhead chubs, Logperch, Northern and Southern Studfish, Central Stonerollers and some large tough minnows would also do well with your Longear in a 75g....just make sure you have enough structure and filtration and you should be good to go.

Logperch would work, Redside dace need really clean high oxygenated water, and will become food when the Longear get bigger.

I have some longears from IL which are pretty close to the MO longears in a 75 with creek chubs. They get along just fine. I had some redfin shiners in there when the longears were much smaller but it didn't take them long to pick off the redfins. If you want a cool fish to go in there with them, then get a few bluehead chubs. You won't be disappointed. They would make a really interesting looking companion that wouldn't steal the spotlight from your longears. I would get at least two more longears becaue they definitely establish a pecking order and if there aren't enough fish to spread the aggression around then you're at risk of one getting singled out and bullied to death.

I've decided to go with three log perch and seven Scarlet shiners. I also got a two inch brook stickleback from my local bait dealer that came in with some of his minnows; so far it is keeping the long ears in line and he is so aggressive I might move him to his own tank.

Also, I was thinking of getting two more long ears and keeping them all, but I feel it may be too many fish in the tank. Of course on the other hand it might work to reduce aggression if the fish are packed in, sort of like what works with African cichlids.
