By the Beach!
Hey I just saw snookn's list and the Macanan Zebra Knifefish (Gymnotus anguillaris) caught my eye. I couldnt find much info on these guys so I was hoping some of you could inform me about them. How big do they get? Are they peaceful? Any special needs? If I do decide to get one it would be going in a 150g with other peaceful tankmates.

These guys max out at 8". They will eat small fish, and will not do well with large fish. This Knife is very worm like, and will be eaten by ANYTHING that can get it to fit into its mouth. I currently have mine with some Goldfish, Shiners, 2" Senegal Bichir, 2" Asian Catfish, 2" BB Catfish, and a Chinese Algae eater. Small, not overly aggressive, and can't fit the Knife in their mouth. (Well, for now, lol) They love to hide, and will do so if you provide the hiding places for them, although mine comes out of hiding the moment the bloodworms hit the water. :D They are also supposedly more active with a group. Anything else specifically that you were thinking of? What tank-mates were you planning on having with it?

As far as I know Gymnotus anguillaris is also called Anaconda knifefish. They get up to 21". Same care as the carapo. I had 2 of them 3 months ago but died from skin fungus as they won't stop nipping on each other. They were at 15" when they came in.

Guess I should have posted this first...
The ones that Snook has for sale are not Gymnotus anguillaris (They never have the right names for their Knives, labeled a Carapo as a Tiger but the scientific name was for a Zebra Knife :screwy:) The species for sale is Gymnotus pedanopterus, I believe I have the correct scientific name. Have one myself, and that is the care for it posted above. I'll get some pics on here in a bit. ;)

(2 Top) Anaconda Knife aka Gymnotus anguillaris
(1 Middle) Snookn21's Knife
(2 Bottom, before<-- Note that this was right after he was added to the tank so the coloring isn't as dark as after he settled in, and now<--Inch larger!) My Zebra Knife aka Gymnotus pedanopterus

And just as I'm typing this, I get the thought that the Knife Snook has could also be Gymnotus Coatesi, just by the different tail length compared to my Gymnotus pedanopterus, but it could be just a size issue. These Knife are too similar, lol.:nilly::D
