mad at petco again

I really wonder how these petco's stay in existence... the corruption must go beyond the single store because that would instantly fail an animal walk in my store.... the regional and district animal companion specialists (among other big bosses) periodically visit the stores to make sure all is running as it should. We get graded on a variety of things but having an animal that obviously sick in the environment is an automatic fail.... which has serious consequences... not quite sure what they are cause i've never been at a store that got that..... but i can't imagine it's good... probably lots of budget cuts.... lay offs...etc..

I think it depends on the DMs and the other superiors (whether they actually care or not, I mean), because outside of corner stores (like mine, for example, which is a corner store for saltwater sales in NJ/NY), the animal aspect of sales is such a small fraction of what the stores does in terms of sales overall. So I've found DMs, Regionals, etc to be very unconcerned with the companion animal departments unless there's literally something rotting in the cage. Since most of their sales just aren't coming from those departments, they don't even bother with the care alerts. Which any CADM (the manager of the animal departments) should be concerned about because a care alert means their job is toast. Mine is perfect example, my store (not that there's anything wrong with it since I'm the CADM lol) is constantly under the supervision of the DM and a care alert means I'm out on my ass and she'd do it to. But we're pulling in almost 8-10k a week on saltwater sales alone, so we have a lot of appearance to keep up with with that kind of traffic. But the other stores in my district... she really doesn't bother and we all know it just based on what goes on in the other stores and what she's said to GMs. I even made a trip on my own personal time to another store to fix mite, set-up and other issues because the CADM/DM/GM didn't care and one of my friends there was really upset about how sick the animals were getting/looking. Corporate is about money, and even on huge store like mine that does real bank on animal sales... it still only accounts for 1/10th or less during the week. Corporate's focus is elsewhere and it sucks.

Now, there's some great DMs, GMs, Regionals, etc that really keep a lot of the stores great and in tip top condition by staying on the employees, managers, etc... but there's a lot of **** ones, too. :-\

It's impossible to find an exotics vet for every petco.. and then they have to be approved by petco as well...which usually means they have to work cheap for petco -.- in this case it's a matter of not having any true exotics pets in the area AND finding the vet that will cost them the least money. means...crappy vet.

Even if the sales are low for that area though.. it costs the store more money to let the animals die and then have to order more than it does to just keep them healthy in the first place. So even when you look at it from a money rules all standpoint.. it is in the companies best interest to keep healthy animals.

Since someone opened up the petco discussion here is my petco rant.
This is why if i have to go to a chain type pet store it is petsmart. The final straw for me was when i saw the local petco trying to sell a kit with their sav monitors that included a !@#$ing Leash! I mean come on. First of all that should never ever ever let me say it again, ever be done to a sav or any reptile for that matter I hate to think of how many beautiful savs will be tortured like that by people who buy from there and just take the stores word for it. If you wanna walk something get a dog!!
When i asked the clerk about it, she went into this huge talk about how its ok, and how she does it with her sav and blah blah blah.

So i then asked if i could see the sav (it was obviously not heated nor fed properly) she took him out of the tank and then dropped him on the floor cuz he hissed at her, so obviously she was full of !@#$ about owning one, and how the hell are you just gonna drop it! so i picked it up and it was just chillin on my arm. If they hadnt had so many security cameras i would have seriously considered walking out with him due to the improper care. (not to condone stealing, but i could have justified it in my mind for that occaision lol)
On top of all that, an absurd number of their fish seem to have ich and other diseases everytime i have been in there.
And i hear horror stories similiar to the ones we all share from people all over so its not just one or 2 stores.
Basically my conclusion is that petco (as a company) needs to die, but thats just my opinion.

Yea ultimately, the company saves the most money by keeping it's animals healthy until they're sold (save for things that sit in the store and have to be marked down every two months or sent back to the vendor/breeder). But, so much of what we can order in costs us so little that I don't think it registers too high on their list of "this is costing us money". And letting things die saves them vet costs, which I've seen plenty of stores do (and plenty of CADMs still make in-store euthanasia decisions, despite the policy change, to avoid the vet) ... even my own GM will occasionally harp on when I call the vet because "we're charged every visit and per animal". That's one of the things I miss about working at Petsmart, if there was a Banfield in that store they'd treat everything under the sun because Banfield is part of Petsmart. Not that Banfield was great, but it was nice being able to just walk something I had a concern about right across the store to the vet because we were allowed to and encouraged to. I don't know, I think there's a lot of corporate issues that need to be straightened out (and with Petsmart, too, but that's another story).

The one employee I told seemed like she actually care about the animal, she sent it to a different store that could take care of it better and even thanked me when I returned. She also apologized for dismissing me so quickly and said to tell her(because the others wouldn't do anything) if I saw anything out of place. Afterwords I saw a tank with ick in it, she immediately went to the shelves for the treatment and treated the whole system
