Mad Max the GATF and Chicxulub's other ATF

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Also, as of this morning there were only two guppies left in there with him. I think he's big enough for rosies next time, should make for a more interesting video. ;)

You better believe there will be pics! Vids too!

Everyone's seen GATF, VATF and FATF time and time again. This is something new so I'm gonna keep you guys updated! This guy feeds like a true MONSTER.

that EFing LOVE that blue tinge! DAYUM too sexy for words. Kinda reminds me of a live smelt though lol.

I would get one but Fugupuff has a little grudge on me...

I believe that the forskalii are the smallest species of ATFs. They grow to 2 feet max? Anyone confirm?

Even looking at pics, it doesn't seem like forskahlii gets much bigger than 2' in the wild. I couldn't find anything about descriptions of length in scientific literature, but I'll admit that I didn't look too hard. It seems to me that most atf, regardless of species, are uncommon larger than a foot and exceptionally rare larger than two feet.

Very nice pickup, congrats.

Is this chart wrong?

http://www.fishbase.us/identification/SpeciesList.php?genus=Hydrocynus

seems to say tanzaniae is a smaller species. can't find anything else that suggests their max size.

What is the tanzaniae max size?

Yes.

There is no documented upper limit for the size of tanzaniae. IGFA does not yet have a record, but it's possible to find fishermen and women who have recorded that examples of over two feet and 25 pounds as being fairly common. Besides, that website lists the total size as 24.7 centimeters (9 inches); the size of the holotype which was collected by Bailey in 1976. Brewster described that fish as an immature female. In my opinion, this fish should probably be considered tied with vittatus as second largest member of Hydrocynus.

It also quotes the existence of H. somonorum as still valid; somonorum was determined to be a junior synonym of H. brevis in 1986. That site also has a picture of a forskahlii listed as brevis and a picture of vittatus listed as forskahlii. I'd love to know what they're sources are because that website is all jacked up.
