I recommend the 10mm LEDs, they are pretty bright. If you look around that site you will find they have mounting plated for LED arrays and pretty much everything you need to make a retro fit LED lighting system.

dropped the LED'sand went with 18K coralife lamp...all that work, argh! Anyway, very happy 'bout the canopy. have a blue LED nightlight built in for her to turn on/off at night.
 
i bought three strands of those and put on my monster tank just on one end and it barley made any light at all. Not sure why?? Glad to see yours worked.
 
Sorry you had spent some time on the first design but definitely like the second better! I was thinking about using the t5 lights but not sure on the color temperature. Do you know how they might compare to the coralife lamp?
