i have about 6 madtom catfish i caught in a creek. I want to put them in my cichlid tanks. Whats the best way to make sure i dont introduce anything bad into the tanks. They are in quarentine and doing fine right now.
First off, I dont think that the madtoms will do very good for very long in the warmer temps of a cichlid tank. But to make sure fish dont introduce anything unwanted into a tank, the best thing to do is quarintine them for at least 2 weeks, but a month is much better.
I dont think that they are mean fish, but their spines are poisonous. Ive been stung by a bullhead (similar but the madtoms vemon is supposed to be MUCH more painful) and it hurts alot lol.
And like fisher said, madtoms have quite a sting. I have been stung by all of the local ones, but tadpole madtoms really pack quite a punch. It's about the smae as a hornet sting.
I have a friend who had one with his for a year that did fine until he went sw and gave the madtom to another friend who had unstable rocks and crushed it. I know they have quite a sting got stung by one yesterday morning and i could still feel it last night.
It might work but depends on the speices of both madtom and cichlids. How large they grow, where the madtoms are from etc. Some would survive fine in the warmer temps but others might not. Some madtoms grow larger than others, some cichlids may get large enough that they try to eat them...there are a lot of things to take into account. For QT a month is best.
