I have a 220gal tank w/ a 55 gal homemade sump. The tank has 2 DIY 1" overflows. The spray bar is 4.5ft w/ 1/8 holes every two inches. I got a good deal on a new Mag 24 pump so i'm trying to make it work. My question is when i hooked everything up it seemed like to much water movement in the tank. I've got some 3-4" fish in it now cycling and they are getting pushed all over the place. What if I added a T and a valve and have some of the pumped water going back in to the sump tank. would this help? any negatives? Its seems like this would help keept he sump stirred up. It is possible that i need larger holes in my spray bar? thx

I have the same exact setup. I first did the tee and had the water flow back into the sump but it was too loud so i just added a ball valve and restricted the pump a bit.

Yes the MD24 is too big, but that doesn't mean that you can't use it. Ditch the spray bar and pump the water through some large sponge filters (Dr. Joe's way and very easy). You can also return the water through a Reverse Under Gravel Filter system (my way...stealthy but slightly involved).

I would have no problem with making the Rugf but won't that blow around the substrate? I'm planning on using pool filter sand.

Did you ad a valve were the T dumps back into the sump or did you add a valve in the line going in the return?

No, it shouldn't. If you spread the flow out enough it won't. The pump outlet is one inch so you just need to make sure that the area of all the holes you drill are significantly more than a total of .8 in^2. The more holes (total area), the slower the return velocity will be. As a reminder, the area formula is the "pie are square" thing.
A = (3.14) x r^2

Nope. I didn't add any valves to my system. I also don't have a T to bleed off extra flow.

I really like the idea. How much more significant? In very simplistic terms the area all the little holes need to add up to significantly more then the area of the 1" return line. Should i use 1" pipe also for the undegravel line?
Can you give a gross estimation of the length of pipe and the holes. Math seems to be you strong suit. Thank you very much. The tank is 72x24.
