what model of laguna would I want on my 220 dat/poly/cat/asian aro tank?

It depends...

1. What size are your drains?
2. How many drains do you have?
3. How much turnover do you want? (I personally think 4 to 6 times is plenty)
4. How high will the pump have to push water?

If you have two 1" drains or one 1.5" drain and you have a standard 220G on a 30" to 36" stand, I would get the Laguna Max Flo 1500. It looks like they have come out with a Max Flo model 1350 which only uses only 75 watts versus the 100 watts that the 1500 uses, but it will give you a little less GPH.

Either the Max Flo 1350 or the 1500 would be good on a 220 (if you have two 1" drains or one 1.5" drain).

It would be a good idea to put a ball valve on your return line so that if it does overpower your overflow you can valve it down. Another option is to "T" the return off and have the excess water recirculate back to your sump.

If I went with the Laguna Max Flo 2000, and with 5' of head, that would give me 6.7 turnover rate. If I had 2 overflows what size pipe would I need?

If you have two 1.5' drains, then you'd be fine using the Max Flo 2000. You would want to use 1.5" pipe down into your sump from the 1.5" bulkhead drain.

But if your drains (assuming you have 2) are only 1", then there's no sense in buying the Max Flo 2000 because it will overwhelm your drains. The 1350 or the 1500 will be a better fit if your drains are only 1" each.

I'm only running 2100GPH on my 770G so that only gives me 2.7 turnovers per hour and my water is great.

I'm going to go with the 1500. That gives me 5.5 turnover per hour. I'll be making DIY overflows like the ones in this video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DFk4bnIxEg&feature=relmfu. Last thing I want is a flooded basement. But 2, 1" overflows is good?
 
wow the laguna pumps are about 140 watts less than the mag at the same price. i wonder if they are as reliable as the mags, i love my mag but this might be another option in the future.

I was referring to standard 1" bulkhead drains. I am not familiar with the contraption in UaruJoeys video. According to his specs, using 1" pipe with his little DIY overflow device you'll get 375GPH. I'm guessing it's because of all the bends and turns that you don't get as much flow as a standard 1" drain. Running two of his overflows using 1" pipe is obviously not going to work since the Max Flo 1500 will do 1215GPH at 5' of head pressure and two 1" devices of his is only going to drain 750GPH.

I don't like the look of those DIY overflows, but if you use them it looks like you should go with 2" PVC.
