I got a mag-float algae cleaner thing with the used tank I bought. However, I think it might have the cleaning pad missing. On one side, there is a thin layer of soft fabric, but on the side that was apparently inside the aquarium, there is what looks and feels like the scratchy part of velcro. Is it supposed to be like this? Or will it scratch the glass? I doubt velcro can scratch glass, but I wasn't sure if it is supposed to have something else on there.

its supposed to be like this it is a mildly abrasive surface to add in cleaning it should not harm glass but it might harm acrlyic and they do make acrlyic mag-floats i have two of them and one is the biggest one they make for upto 300 gal and i use it on my 125 and it works great

the biggest one they make is magfloat 1000 http://www.aquariumguys.com/mag-float-1000-glass-acrylic.html
not the 350 like you have...

anyways you have to use the correct one for each tank.... do not use the glass one for an acrylic tank it will scratch it bad!!

You could use them to hold a phone book to the fridge...
