Maggots are the staple food going in lakes all over England being used for coarse fishing I often bring home 1/2 a pint and feed them to my fish all the cats and cichlids love them I have heard don't do it all the time but they do love them my jack Dempsey gorges him self on them
Thanks, I bought maggots for feeding my geckos and I thought my fish maybe would like it. But of course I don't shall feed it all the time, just for give them something extra.
THey are fine for most fish as a portion of thier diet, just don't use them as the only food item offered. A mixed diet will do best for most if not all fish.
Side note; Just because a fish eagerly eats what is offered to it does not mean it is a good food for them. I make this point because of the statement that Scotty made about his Dempsy gorging himself on maggots. Althought I don't think Scotty believes this, many people are under the impression that if thier fish eats one item more willingly than another than that item is good for thier fish. Brine shrimp for example, many fish will eat this stuff like madd untill they are stuffed but brineshrimp is not a great food.
Hey, I'm the same way now that I think about it......Put a pizza and some health food in front of me, guess which one I'll go for first
as I say don't feed them on them all the time you must very your fished diet as Ornatapinnis said keep a varied diet for your fish but as a once a week treat not a problem in the summer they get them twice a week but I mix in prawns mussels and cockles.my koi love them as well
